Six friends go on a spelunking expedition after one of them lost her husband and daughter one year prior. They end up in an unexplored cave, but they’re not alone

The female led cast makes this movie stand out from other modern day horrors, and the creature aspect and claustrophobic environment makes it unique. The mixture of personalities and nationalities gives everyone someone to relate to. Sarah’s Scottish (you know, like me), Juno’s American, Beth’s English, sisters Sam and Rebecca are European (I don’t actually know where in Europe, it’s never mentioned, but one of the actors is Swedish and the other is Dutch so you work it out), and Holly is Irish.

The performances are pretty good, although there are a few characters you don’t really get to know (like the Euro sisters), so their fates aren’t that impactful to me. It’s the same with Holly, who seemed like she would be an interesting character as an adrenaline junkie. She was played by Nora-Jane Noone, who I had previously seen in The Magdalene Sisters, which is really good Irish movie that I really recommend. Her performance was good in that.

The opening scene is one of the most memorable. It’s so abrupt, in a Final Destination kind of way. The first appearance of the crawlers (although you can see them in the background beforehand if you look hard enough), is another great scene. It’s weird to think that the cave was actually a set built at Pinewood Studios in London. Apparently it would have been “too dangerous and time-consuming” to film inside a real cave, which is fair enough. The exteriors were filmed in Scotland and England.

I really don’t want to spoil this movie, so I’m going to make this review short. I recommend experiencing it for yourself if you haven’t already. I will say this, though. The UK and US had different endings.
