Fantasy horror, or dark fantasy, is different from your Lord of the Rings and Princess Bride style of the genre. Filmmakers like Tim Burton and Guillermo del Toro dominate the genre by delivering stylish visuals in beautifully disturbing stories featuring outlandish and inhuman characters. Films like Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) and the Phantasm franchise (1979-2016) blend together different elements to create unique and otherworldly tales that feel straight out of a Grimms fairytale.
