Hammer Film Productions was founded in 1934 in London by William Hinds and James Carreras. The main horror format began in 1955 with The Quatermass Xperiment, which spawned two sequels. 1957 saw the first instalment of the Frankenstein series, 1958 had the first of the Dracula series and 1959 had the first of The Mummy films; all of which were remakes of the Universal monsters. They also ventured into other subgenres of horror such as psychological, supernatural, sci-fi, and mystery.
