(27 July 1972)
Born Takashi Shimizu in Maebashi, Gunma, Japan.
Notable works include: Ju-on: The Grudge (2002), Marebito (2004) and Dark Tales of Japan (2004).
Shimizu’s first horror was in 1998 with the beginning of the Ju-On franchise, Katasumi and 4444444444 (ten fours), two horror shorts. This was followed up with Ju-on: The Curse and Ju-on: The Curse 2, both of which were released straight to video in 2000. He then directed the third instalment of the Tomie franchise (based on the manga by horror icon Junji Ito) in 2001. He released the next two instalments in the franchise, Ju-on: The Grudge (2002) and Ju-on: The Grudge 2 (2003) then remade it in 2004 for American audiences. That same year he directed a segment in the made-for-TV anthology, Dark Tales of Japan and co-directed the TV series, The Great Horror Family. In 2017 he produced Resident Evil: Vendetta, a CGI movie based on the horror video game series.
Fun fact: Takashi directed a live-action adaptation of the Studio Ghibli movie (based on the 1985 novel) Kiki’s Delivery Service in 2014.
