Born John Howard Carpenter in Carthage, New York.
Notable works include: Halloween (1978), The Fog (1980) and The Thing (1982).
Along with horror, Carpenter is associated with the action genre, first garnering attention with his second feature film, Assault on Precinct 13 (1976). He has directed 10 horror movies, his last being in 2010 with the wholey forgettable, The Ward. Aside from directing and producing, he also scores his own movies, creating the haunting sounds heard in the first and last three Halloween movies, along with many others.
Fun fact: John is actually an avid gamer. His son, Cody, got him into them when he was a child. The two even attend E3 together.
