The Boy (2016) Review

It’s October 6th and today we’re looking at the 2016 horror that got a lot of negative reviews. That makes me a little bit sad because I enjoyed it, but then again I’m not as picky as most people when it comes to horrors and thrillers.

Greta Evans is a young girl from America, who travels to England after being hired as a nanny by a wealthy family. When the elderly couple introduce her to the child she will be caring for, Greta finds it unusual that their child is actually a porcelain doll, whom they call Brahms. After teaching her the rules of the house and how to take care of Brahms, the couple leave on vacation. Greta begins to ignore the rules, thinking they are a joke, and continues her life as normal. Soon strange things start happening with the doll.

I wanted to do this review spoiler free so I’ll leave it there.

As stated before, the movie has received a lot of negative reviews. I thought it was interesting. It made you think one thing, then changed into something else. It’s quite a frightening situation that this girl is in, so if you think of it in those terms, you might enjoy it more. Despite the negativity, the movie made back 6 times its budget, and a sequel is due for release this December.

Setting it in a large house (filmed in a small castle by the way), adds to the ambiance with the size, which could be quite disorientating if you get lost. Having her there alone it also unsettling. Every noise is enough to set you on edge. Again, put yourself in her shoes.

The characters are decent enough. Greta feels relatable. She’s escaping her abusive ex, which gives her personal baggage. The elderly couple who hire her, the Heelshires (a strange surname I’ve never heard before), clearly have a secret which they feel guilty about. The sad backstory behind Brahms makes you feel sorry for them. When Greta’s ex shows up, he’s the douche bag you would have expected, so there’s no disappointment there. Malcolm, who is the secondary character that spends time with Greta, is pretty likable. Nothing to really say there.

The movie can be enjoyable if you’re able to watch a movie without nit-picking. Trust me, it makes watching movies better. Movies are supposed to be entertaining, so just let them entertain you. Don’t look for imperfections. Just watch.
