Five years after the murders at Camp Crystal Lake, a training camp for counsellors opens on the other side of the lake. On their first night, they are told the legend of Jason Voorhees, who after seeing his mother beheaded is out for revenge. Camp Crystal Lake is now off limits by order of the police, and for good reason.

Mrs Voorhees decomposing head is… well it doesn’t really look like her does it? Regardless, it’s still really well done.

Now the characters are pretty hit or miss. Ginny’s your typical screaming, crying victim, so it’s kind of a surprise that she’s our final girl. Paul tries to be the hero, but doesn’t seem to have a lot of success. Ted is your traditional goofball, but it doesn’t get annoying. Terry’s actually not too bad of a character. She has been forced into the role of the sexy one who has to get naked when she swims and has to wear revealing clothing regularly. It can be inconsistent to her character’s personality. Scott is a bit of a pervy douche, but he’s not the worst character in the movie. Sandra is annoying as all hell. She’s constantly talking about “Camp Blood” and it gets so repetitive, like in Halloween when Linda says “totally” all the time. Jeff doesn’t seem like his character is fully developed. He’s kind of there to just take crap from Sandra. Mark is our diverse character with an unfair advantage against a stalking serial killer. He’s okay as a character in terms of personality. Vickie’s kind of there to be there I think. She doesn’t have a real purpose other than to help raise the body count and nearly have sexy fun time with Mark.

The kills are pretty similar to those in the first movie, but it doesn’t come across as repetitive. Although to be honest I never thought of the kills in these movies as repetitive while watching them all in one session. It’s not until things are pointed out to me that I start to notice the negatives in films.

As a sequel, it’s not the best, but it’s not the worst. It has its moments and does a few different things than the first. Ginny’s use of child psychology is an effective piece of characterisation that gives her a bit of extra depth. Aside from the crying and screaming, she’s still a pretty decent final girl.
