In Cold Rock, Washington, several children have disappeared. A few people have claimed to have seen the culprit, and the town have called him “The Tall Man”. The FBI have been called in to help with the search. The town has fallen into poverty since the closing of the mines. There are no schools and only a small doctor’s surgery. One night, Julia, the local nurse, wakes up to find her son missing. Seeing a man dressed in black whisk him away, she chases him to get her son back.
I can’t really continue without spoiling the plot. All I can say is that it gets rather confusing as it goes, until the end where it gets rather brilliant. I came across this on Netflix a few years ago.
Jessica Biel stars as Julia. She comes across as a smart and caring woman. This is another movie with Jodelle Ferland, which is the second I have reviewed, (the first being Case 39). She isn’t so creepy in this one, mostly because she doesn’t talk. She plays a young girl from a dysfunctional and abusive home with a passion for art.
The setting is rather dark. The town looks almost deserted and very bleak. You almost feel sorry for the residents, stuck in a once prosperous town, which is now dying.
This is a great movie. It makes a change from a slasher flick. It’s smart, full of twists and slightly creepy. Give it a go, you won’t regret it.
